Downloading BackTrack

With the release of Backtrack 5 we now support 32 bit, 64 bit and ARM architectures. Backtrack 5 comes with two main Window Managers - Gnome and KDE. You can choose to download page either a VMWare image or a bootable ISO image (recommended if you run Backtrack from a LiveCD or a HDD/USB installation). Please use our official mirrors to download BackTrack. These can be found in the download page. Do not use a download manager with our links as your download will most probably get corrupted.

Verifying the Download in Linux

Once you have downloaded BackTrack5 R2, you should check the validity of the downloaded file using md5sum. This will allow you to eliminate the most common problem encountered by BackTrack users - badly downloaded (corrupt) ISO files. To check the MD5 sum of your downloaded ISO, use the md5sum command:

Verifying the Download in Windows

1. To check the md5sum of your BackTrack ISO in Windows, you can use the free "hashcalc" tool from SlavaSoft HashCalc - Hash, CRC, and HMAC Calculator
2. Once downloaded, open hashcalc, uncheck all the checkboxes except md5 and change data format to "file".
3. In the data box on the right hand side is a button with 3 dots, click it and navigate to where you downloaded your .iso or .bz2 and select it, click open and then "calculate" .After a few seconds (or more depending on your computer speed) there will be a 32 bit string next to the word md5, this is the md5 of your file.

Compare your md5 to the md5 hash on the download page. If they are the same then your iso or bz2 is good, if not your file is corrupt and you need to download it again.

Verifying the Download in OSX

Open up the console and use the md5 command to calculate your BackTrack ISO md5:

Important Notes

The most common problems encountered with BackTrack by newcomers are:

1. ISO md5sum mismatches, which result in random issues in BackTrack.
2. Low media quality (in case of DVDS), or burning the ISO file at speeds which are too high.
3. Burning BackTrack to a DVD as a file instead of a disc image.

Please make sure to check everything that was previous mentioned before starting a thread on the Forum.

What next?

The BackTrack 5 ISO image is bootable, meaning that you will need to either burn the ISO to a DVD or transfer it to a USB stick. Once you have done this, you will then be able to boot your computer into the BackTrack Live environment. From this Live environment you can continue to use BackTrack or install it to your HDD using one of the installation guides listed on the Installation page.

Hotspot Shield is a free program that allows you to secure your connection while surfing WiFi hotspots and to access sites not normally available outside of the USA, like Hulu andPandora. 

What can you do with HotSpot Shield?

To secure your internet connection, Hotspot Shield creates a Virtual Private Network (a secure connection, usually abbreviated to VPN) between your computer and the Hotspot Shield developer's website, Anchorfree, based in the USA. This connection makes websites think that you are based in the US.

The major reason why users are flocking to Hotspot Shield is because it allows you to view US websites that are usually restricted to people who don't live there. This is particularly useful for video sites such as Hulu or region-restricted restricted videos on YouTube.

Hotspot Shield now includes malware protection meaning that while using it, you shouldn't get infected by anything that may damage your system. 

Is it easy to use?

Everything is done in an extra tab open in your browser, so there's no need to configure anything. A green and red shield in your system tray indicates when Hotspot Shield is or is not connected. The VPN is encrypted with 128 bit SSL encryption so you can surf safely without worrying about others intercepting your data. 

Does it work?

Hotspot Shield generally works very well. It is ad-supported, however, and be warned that it tries to install a toolbar, although you can opt out of this.
